On the 22nd November 2016 MTAS were invited to be a guest speaker by KYSS ( Kinsale Youth Support Services) for the talk on ‘Adolescent Development and Substance Misuse In The 21st Century’. Patrick Cooney (Family Counsellor) and Edel Foley (Clinical Manager) presented on the night .
We were delighted with the turn out of approximately 85 people which showed people’s dedication to understanding adolescents that little bit more. The presentation explained the stages of adolescent development and what to expect in each stage, the neuroscience behind the adolescent brain, the changing trends in substance misuse and the real statistics behind the fact that young people’s substance misuse is reducing but alcohol misuse remains dangerously high. Finally the presentation addressed how parents can help, which was followed by a wonderful discussion during the questions and answers time, in particular in relation to the effects of alcohol on the development process and also on how important families/ guardians are to adolescents.
James O’Mahony (Chairperson of KYSS) gave an outstanding speech about Matt Talbot Adolescent Services CLG at the end of the night, complementing the Assessment and Day Treatment Centre on their unique ability to engage so effectively with young people and stated that our service is his ‘number one service to refer to’.
Feedback on the night was extremely positive and we have received further requests to present the same talk to other organisations and secondary schools which we will be doing in 2017.
